Research overview
There are several research efforts in the laboratory which are all directed at understanding – at the molecular level - the various mechanisms and principles that allow populations of bacteria to adapt to and survive in dynamic environments in general and in the context of host-pathogen interactions in particular. Such adaptive principles may include both genetically ‘programmed’ responses such as cell differentiation and gene expression as well as adaptive evolutionary changes where the genetic composition of a bacterial population changes as a result of mutation and natural selection.
