Research

We study the evolution of complex antimicrobial resistance mechanisms in microbial pathogens and the consequence of resistance evolution on the biology of the host-microbe relationship. We use experimental microbial evolution in combination with a number of systems biology approaches to quantitatively describe the evolutionary adaptations imposed on the microbes when they are exposed to new and changing environments such as antibiotic challenge. Our work focuses on the evolution of antimicrobial peptide resistance in the human opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P.aeruginosa), both in vitro (in the laboratory) and in bacteria isolated in hospital clinics.

Student projects

We offer a number of student projects opportunities ranging from special projects to master thesis level. Please contact us ( ) if you are interested in doing an antibiotic resistance project. You can find a number of suggestions for student project topics we are currently running in the laboratory here.
